Review: "Something Familiar" by Hibou

Something Familiar is an album that will will leave you feeling relaxed, and whimsically dreamy.

Peter Michel delivers us this beautifully nostalgic album under the moniker Hibou, through Seattle indie label, Barsuk Records. Peter takes us on a wonderful adventure that somehow brings back your fondest memory, for a brief warm hug.

A perfect blend of shoegaze and dreampop, Peter feeds us dreamy sing song synths that carry unforgettable melodies throughout Something Familiar. He also pairs this with nostalgia filled lyrics and groovy anthems that leave you starved for more at the end of the album.

These groovy bops are perfected in the tracks, “Amethyst” and “Glamour”, and give the album a lush roadtrip vibe that makes it impossible to stop humming along. These bangers are softened throughout the album by more atmospheric moments that sweep over the listener and drown them in another world like “Fall Into”, “Opia”, and “You Could Vanish Again”.

The album rocks an impressive drum line that adds a clean and crisp surf pop vibe to dance along with. “Malison” and “Only In The Dark” give the album a vibe that is classic and full of true nostalgia.

Something Familiar is an album that brings a nostalgic dream world to life and pulls the listener right into the midst of it. Staying true to his sound, Peter delivers whimsically nostalgic dream pop, and I could listen to it forever.
